Arts and Crafts Extension

This self-build, two-storey extension has been carefully designed as a clearly contemporary addition to an early Arts and Crafts cottage. Through its scale, form and use of complementary materials, a low-level glazed link clearly distinguishes the new extension from the original building while creating a sensitive connection between the two.

The aim was to maximise the efficient use of the limited available space, creating an open-plan kitchen and dining area at ground-floor level, with a new bedroom above.

The project involved navigating complex planning considerations, including Green Belt planning restrictions and bat mitigation requirements. Consent was achieved through close coordination with the structural engineers and ecologists, alongside detailed negotiations with the relevant planning authorities.

The project was progressed through each stage from initial feasibility studies and concept development, through to obtaining Planning Permission and completing the Technical Design required for full Building Control approval prior to commencing on site. Budget costing and financial viability were reviewed throughout the design and approval process.

The project is currently under construction.
