ROCK HOUSE

This 3 storey townhouse, built circa 1740 was originally one room deep with a kitchen and parlour at ground floor with bedrooms above. The symmetrical front elevation, set around a front door is typical for this period of architecture. Further rear extensions were added in the 1890’s, mid and late 20th century. The property had been stripped back to the core structure and features.

Our work involved turning this former dentists’ surgery back to a well-appointed and modernised town house with discrete ‘Sheepwool’ insulation, solar panels, new services throughout and improved fire protections. It is used temporarily as a top-end

As a Corbel Design and Build project, we produced an exacting set of detailed working drawings , schedule of works and specification, that enabled accurate pricing, site construction and management throughout the job, delivering on time and on budget.

This level of detail was much more than is usually given in a traditional tender process and enabled the client to be fully engaged throughout. It allowed our in-house tradesmen and women to produce an outstanding top end finish that all parties were very pleased with.

The name ‘Rock House’ dates to at least 1884. Nobody is quite sure where the name derives!

Built in 1841, the Chapel of the Holy Evangelists is Grade I listed and the most historically significant building on the Killerton estate. With its iconic rose window, it means so much to many. We want to ensure that this magnificent building can continue to be enjoyed by everyone, for ever.

SOURCING THE STONE

The first phase of work includes repairs and stabilisation to the stonework façade, using local Devon stone. It was always thought that it was the stone from the Clump that had been used but geologists believe that it was a quarry at Budlake that had been originally used. The stone from the Clump was used for repairs around 30 years ago and this has perished.
